Winter is Coming!

Posted by Patrick Holland on

The cool weather is here!   The Colorado mins will start opening in a week and a half they're already skiing at Killington VT and Sunday River ME North Face continues to get more white by the day....were nearly there.  A friend of mine gave me a vintage jumping ski that I'm going to use as a curtain valence once I figure it out.  It is a great conversation piece it immediately got us talking about all the different ways people enjoy the snow from Nordic Skiing to Dog Sledding to Speed Skiing to Bump Skiing to.......Ski Jumping!

Where do these jumpers come from?  In New England there is still some active high school jumping teams that we know about.  We hear about FIS events in NY occasionally.  Growing up in New England there was an old jump behind the Red Stallion in the Carrabassett Valley, one at Holderness in NH, the huge one in Berlin NH.  All these are now overgrown with trees and/or lie in piles of rubble...... As far as we can tell it is a sport that was once very popular that doesn't seem to hit our radar these days when compared to WC Alpine, Nordic, and of course the newer Freestyle Slopestyle and Big Air.  However,  we love the idea of it,  the courage it takes to fly down the ramp and off the jump with free heels and 9' long skis!  We're having a blast with YouTube and check out  www.skijumpingusa.com it's so cool.  I'm going to try it this winter for sure.    Also www.fisskijumping.com is cool too.  Go Bigr check it out!
